US police have found a gun magazine near the site of a crash that totalled a $1m Ferrari Enzo in which former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson was riding. Local law enforcement officials believe the clip is connected with the smash, the Los Angeles Times reported this week.
The crash took place at dawn on Tuesday, 21 February on the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. It resulted in the Enzo being ripped in two. At the time, Eriksson told police the driver was a German man named Dietrich who fled the scene and was not found despite a three-hour search. Police are understandably very keen to talk to the alleged driver.
Just after the crash, police said they were taking Eriksson at his word that he was the passenger. However, they pointed out that Eriksson had a bloody lip and blood was found only on the driver's airbag, not the passenger-side bag. He was found to have a blood alcohol level above the limit allowed to drivers by California law.
Eriksson was not arrested after the smash, and has not been charged with any offence.
On Monday, Sheriff's Sergeant Phil Brooks told the paper Eriksson brought the Enzo to the US from England. He claimed the car was not authorised for driving in California because it lacked appropriate documentation.
He also said the Enzo's speed had now been calculated to be 162mph - the road's speed limit is 55mph at the site of the impact, described by locals as a straight section of road. The driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, which became airborne and slammed into a telegraph pole.
