Sony is to launch a global content download service for its PlayStation Portable handheld games console, the company said today. It will also ship a PSP version of the hugely popular PS2 accessory EyeToy, and a GPS-module to enable not only navigation but location-specific game functionality.
Details are few and far between, but Sony's download service will initially offer original PlayStation games to allow PSP users to "revive software assets" - at a price, we'd guess. The company also pledged to expand its PlayStation Spot network of PSP-friendly Wi-Fi hotspots in Japan and, presumably, beyond.
Existing PSP users will shortly get a new Firmware upgrade that will add support for Macromedia Flash and enhance the console's existing RSS feed handler to allow it to access and save Internet radio and movie content, Sony said.
The company said it will target new users by launching in Europe and North America the basic package it has offered in Japan since the December 2004. The move makes for a lower cost of entry - €199/$199 (£137)- though buyers only get an AC adaptor with their console rather than all the accessories bundled with the existing Value Pack.
The Base Pack comes to Europe on 22 March and will debut in North America by the end of the month. Japanese buyers will soon get a second Base Pack, this time with a white PSP, for ¥19,800 ($167/£96).
Sony didn't say how much the PSP EyeToy and GPS receiver are likely to cost, but it did say they will be introduced in the Autumn. ®
