Intel appears set to ship the its anticipated Xeon 3000 processor family for single-CPU servers and workstations in August - a year after details of the new product line first emerged. The chips will form part of the company's 'Kaylo' platform for such machines.
According to a roadmap graphic posted (http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/news.php?tid=623005&starttime=0&endtime=0&www.reghardware.co.uk) by Chinese-language site HKEPC, Q3 will see the debut of 'Conroe' CPUs for uni-processor servers running on the Mukilteo chipset. No surprise there: Intel has long touted its desktop CPUs as single-processor server chips.
In August 2005, however, it was claimed Intel is preparing the Xeon 3000 chips to ship alongside its Xeon 5000 two-way server processor and Xeon 7000 multi-way server processor lines. So far, Intel has shipped 5000- and 7000-series CPUs, most recently the 'Woodcrest' 51xx range, based on its next-generation, Core 2 microarchitecture.
A DigiTimes report today claims the Xeon 3000 line will ship in August to replace the current uni-processor-oriented Pentium Ds it offes today. It's hard to see the Xeon 3000 series and the roadmap slide's unnamed Conroe-based CPU not being one and the same.
Mulkiteo is expected to ship as the 3000 family of chipsets, which Intel has yet to announce formally but which Tyan let slip earlier this month when it announced the Core 2 Duo-based version of its Typhoon 'personal supercomputer'. ®
