VIA is gearing up to ship a single-chip chipset aimed at ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) at the end of Q3, the company said yesterday. The part will be used in the upcoming DualCor device (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/01/06/dualcor_cpc_pda_pc/), it said.
The VX700 measures 3.5 x 3.5cm but packs in a UniChrome Pro II graphics core with MPEG 2, MPEG 4 and WMV 9 hardware-accelerated video decoding. VIa said the chipset can do display rotation and has LVDS and DVI transmitter circuitry to support a built-in LCD or and external monitor. It also has HDTV connectivity

The part connects to a VIA C7-M or C7-M ULV processor across a 400MHz or 533MHz frontside bus, linking the CPU through to 333MHz or 400MHz DDR SDRAM, or 333, 400 or 533MHz DDR 2 memory.
It can host up to six USB ports, four PCI slots, two SATA or two SATA II devices, and up to to parallel ATA units. It also has eight-channel HD audio on board.
VIA said the VX700 is expected to be available in volume quantities "later in Q3". ®
