South Korea's Daewoo - probably better known over here for its cars than its computers - is to follow Samsung into the ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) arena: the firm's Lucoms subsidiary has announced the Solo M1.

Like the Samsung Q1 (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/22/review_samsung_q1/), the M1 sports a 7in LCD, but this time its a spacier 800 x 480 unit, better than the Q1's too-narrow 800 x 400 job. The Lucoms gadget is the better looking of the two, too.
The display is driven by the Intel GMA 900 graphics engine integrated into the unit's 915GMS chipset. The processor is a ye olde 900MHz ultra-low voltage Celeron M 353. There's 512MB of 400MHz DDR 2 SDRAM on board and a 1.8in, 4,200rpm 30GB hard drive. Alas, it runs Windows XP Tablet PC Edition.

The M1 has Bluetooth 1.2 and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi for connectivity, and folk buying the docking station also get 10/100Mbps Ethernet. The dock also provides four extra USB ports, and S-video and VGA outputs. The M1 itself has a single USB connector and a four-in-one memory card reader.
The device weighs 830g and measures 22.6 x 11.4 x 2.5cm. ®
