AMD's Socket F interconnect and the DDR 2-enabled Opteron processors that will require it will not launch until mid-August, the chip maker has apparently revealed.
Until now, moles were pointing to 1 August as the launch date, following a slight delay from an alleged originally scheduled roll-out on 11 July (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/19/amd_opteron_socket_f_reschedule/). Socket F motherboards were on display at Computex (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/08/computex_socket_f_mobos/) in June. But an AMD spokeswoman cited (http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=NCVZAWDHG0TSUQSNDLPSKH0CJUNN2JVN?articleID=190900673&www.reghardware.co.uk) by CRN said the technology will debut in the middle of the month.
The 1,207-pin Socket F parts are expected to ship as the 22xx and 82xx families. Opteron 1xxx will likely ship at the same time, though they will use AMD's Socket AM2 interconnect.
Intel is expected to announce its Xeon MP 71xx series on 27 August, ahead of the Xeon 3000 family of CPUs for uni-processor systems. The 3xxx chips will ship in September, leaked roadmaps suggest.
Last week, Intel said it was bring forward the release of its quad-core Xeon, 'Clovertown', to Q4 2006 from Q1 2007. Clovertown essentially packs two dual-core 'Woodcrest' Xeons into a single, pin-compatible package. AMD has said it will ship quad-core Opterons in H1 2007. ®
