ATI CEO Dave Orton yesterday said the company's short-term roadmap remains the same, whether the firm gets bought by AMD or not, but there's still concern in some quarters that news of the takeover will impact ATI's ability to ship Intel-oriented chipsets in the near future. Well, according to mobo maker DFI, ATI's RD600 for Core 2 Duo will ship.
Staffers at Aussie website Tweaktown just got back from a visit to DFI in Taiwan and report (http://www.tweaktown.com/articles/926/dfi_confirms_ati_rd600_for_conroe_nforce_590_sli_ie/index.html?www.reghardware.co.uk) that a company engineer claimed RD600 will go ahead as planned.
Longer term, the situation is unclear. ATI's shareholders may reject the AMD offer. If they accept it, Intel may continue to license its bus technology. Or it may not. AMD is assuming it won't or that customers will simply choose to look elsewhere for non-Intel chipsets for Intel-made processors. Certainly, it warned yesterday that it expects ATI's Intel-related revenues to fall off over time, though it said the warning was a prudent assumption rather than a forecast of how the merger will play out. ®
