AMD now commands more than a quarter of the x86 server processor market, the latest figures from Mercury Research reveal. As of Q2 2006, the chip maker's market share stands at 25.9 per cent, up from 22.1 per cent in Q1.
Those numbers mark a big increase over Q4 2005's 16.4 per cent figure, up from 12.7 per cent in Q3, again according to numbers calculated by Mercury earlier this year. Even a modest sequential growth will give AMD a big Q3 year-on-year increase to shout about.
Q3 should see the arrival of both AMD's DDR 2-friendly Opteron server chips and machines based on Intel's 'Woodcrest' Xeon DP 5100 series, both of which will make for some interesting Q3 numbers once the quarter is past.
Mercury generally keeps its figures to itself and its paying customers, and thus far no other Q2 numbers have slipped out. ®
