AMD may be retaining the ATI brand for its discrete graphics chip products, but it's going to drop the old name from its newly acquired chipset business, it has been claimed. Out will go CrossFire Xpress, in will come AMD x80X CrossFire.
The exact numbering will depend on the chipset family, DailyTech reports (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=4945&www.reghardware.co.uk) which cites the company's latest roadmap. The CrossFire Xpress 1600 series will become the AMD 480X CrossFire line, while the CrossFire Xpress 3200 range will soon be branded AMD 580X CrossFire.
The chipsets' features, the report claims, will remain unchanged, and while ATI juggled with the products' naming scheme before, this change really puts the stamp on AMD's ambition to match Intel as a producer of chipsets.
The move is also likely to renew speculation that AMD may choose to spin off or sell the discrete graphics business, now the only part of the former ATI to retain its original name, neatly partitioning for a divestment should AMD ever feel the need to do so. ®
