Intel has allegedly earmarked April not only for desktop four-core processor price cuts but also to reduce what it charges for quad- and dual-core chips designed for single-processor systems.

Taiwanese server maker sources cited by DigiTimes, claim the cuts coming to Xeon 3200 and 3000 series will see up between 10 and 38.7 per cent trimmed off their prices.

Past reports have pointed to a Core 2 Quad price cut on 22 April, and while the price date for the alleged Xeon price cuts isn't yet clear, it's clearly no coincidence.

With 45nm dual- and quad-core desktop processors not expected to launch until early 2008, Xeon workstation and server parts based upon them will probably appear later. That leaves the 3000 and 3200 forming the core of Intel's pitch for the hearts, minds and wallets of one-way server manufacturers until Q1 2008 at the earliest.

In the meantime, the chip giant is expected to drive the two series further with new chipsets in H2: 'Bigby-P' and 'Bigby-V', according to the report, both part of the 'Garlow' platform.
