Intel preps lower power Core 2 Quads

Intel is set to release in two months' time a version of its Core 2 Quad four-core processor that consumes less power than the chip available today.

Due mid-July, the new version is called G0 - the current is B3 - and knocks the Core 2 Quad's Thermal Design Power - how much power the chip consumes when it's running flat out - from 105W down to 95W.

Improved chip packaging also means that the G0 Core 2 Quad can cope with a maximum environmental temperature of 73°C, up from 62°C, allowing system builders to slow down cooling fans to reduce a machine's overal power consumption and noise level.

Since the Core 2 Quad is made by connecting two Core 2 Duo dice in a single chip package, it stands to reasons Intel's Core 2 Duo processors will likewise gain a TDP reduction in the coming months. ®
