Dell to counter carbon with Euro tree-planting plan

Dell has brought its carbon-confounding Plant a Tree For Me scheme to Europe, allowing buyers to make a small donation to help counter the emissions arising from keeping their computers powered up.

The scheme gives buyers of notebook, desktop and server Dells the chance to donate, respectively, £1/€1.50, £3/€4.50 or £20/€29.50 to contribute to the replanting of trees in "professionally managed reforestation projects".

CEO Michael Dell said he would match donations made by consumers in the next three months with cash from his own capacious pockets.

The green donation programme is being hosted by US charity Carbonfund.org, which also lets punters make tree-planting friendly financial contributions for purchased inkjet and laser printers; LCD and CRT monitors; and workstations, with donations ranging from £0.50 to £6.50.

Or you can just pay £2.50 to have a tree planted. Or more than one. Carbonfund.org's European reforestation site is located in Hungary.

Dell also said it was now demanding greenhouse gas emission data from its suppliers, warning those who fail to do so that they may not make the grade as a Dell supplier in future.
