Nvidia gains ground in graphics

And it's Intel and AMD chasing up the rear

Updated Nvidia is gaining market share on both AMD and Intel within the graphics market, according to analyst firm Jon Peddie Research (JPR). However, all three vendors maintained their dominance to remain at the top of the tree during the second quarter of 2007.

Despite JPR describing Q2 as a traditionally slow quarter, total shipments during the period were up by 3 per cent over the previous quarter to 81.3m units. Shipments also rose by 8.2 per cent compared to the same period in 2006.

Overall in the graphics market, Intel’s market share dropped by 2.8 per cent to 37.6 per cent, based on sales of 30.59m units, but allowed it to remain the dominant player. Nvidia took second position with a market share growth of 12.9 per cent to 32.6 per cent and sales of 26.48m units, while AMD dropped 7.2 per cent market share to third position with 19.5 per cent market share and sales of 15.86m units.

Within the desktop market, Nvidia took a 43 per cent share and Intel claimed 38.5 per cent, while AMD gained a significantly lower market share at 23 per cent.

The mobile chips market, which is no doubt buoyant given the increasing popularity of laptops over desktops, accounted for 31.2 per cent of overall graphics chips sales, with 24.5m units sold. Intel exerted its dominance during the quarter and took 51.5 per cent of the market share, while Nvidia and AMD came in behind with 27 and 21 per cent respectively.

Of course there are other players in the overall market; however the figures are not quite as compelling. VIA/S3 shipped 6.26m units during the quarter, amounting to 7.7 per cent of the market, and SiS sold 2m units, which gives it 2.5 per cent of the market share.

JPR has informed Register Hardware that there were errors in its press release. While figures for total shipments for the quarter remain at 81.3m units, up 3 per cent in over last quarter, JPR's has corrected the rise in shipments as compared to the same period in 2006 to 10.6 per cent.

On the desktop arena, JPR's correction still identifies Nvidia as the winner. However, its updated figures position Nvidia as claiming 35 per cent market share against Intel's 31.3 per cent. AMD had a modest gain to 18.8 per cent.
