Belkin is pitting itself against some of the HDMI industry’s fiercest heavyweights and planning to launch a wireless version of the technology. However, Belkin doesn’t plan to base its technology over Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and is keeping its lips, well, fairly shut until CES in January.

A representative from the company confirmed to Register Hardware that it’s been trialling a version of its wireless HDMI in its own offices for the past two weeks.

While UWB has been pitched for this type of application by other vendors, Belkin appears to have plumped for 802.11a.

In November, industry heavyweights including Samsung, Sony and Toshiba came together to work on a wireless alternative to HDMI cabling. (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/11/01/ce_giants_punt_wihd/) Dubbed WirelessHD, the specification has been described as a "high-speed wireless, multi-gigabit technology in the unlicensed 60GHz band [with] smart antenna technology to overcome line-of-sight constraints”.
