Poor

As aweb designer myself this par of the site has a terrible layout and looks rushed, sorry but it does

Hmm...

IMHO - Not great really is it?

Fixed the width for a 1024px design without flexing gracefully for the hoards still browsing at 800x600 (but everyone enjoys a bit of horizontal scrolling right?).

Little consideration for web standards or accessibility (as of 09/09 fails validation on CSS, 508 & WAI - but at least the XHTML is OK even if it is table heavy).

Frankly awful abuse of colour and the student responsible probably shouldn't have been left unsupervised with that set of stock WEB2.0 gradients. The logo font works better for Dell.

Sorry. Wish I liked it, but looks like two steps back to me.

C - could do better and needs to pay more attention in web design classes (or hire a professional from your readership) in future.

A little more contrast please.

Ageing eyes and lack of contrast make reading many web sites difficult.

Title correction

It should have an extra 'ch' in it, to read Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. Or are you not using the 70's Bowie classic as inspiration??

I'm ablivalent about the redesign

But I wish the Q&A didn't appear on my RSS feed.

Redesign

Do I hear a distant sound of whalesong? Is that a whiff of joss-sticks in the air?

Have to agree

...with most previous posters. Although personally I'm ambivalent about the aesthetics, there's really no excuse these days for any site design that relies on tables for formatting and doesn't scale gracefully (up OR down).

10/10 For effort...

The new logo is well a bit poor, and looks kinda like it's from the 80s.

I miss the 'black' look of the old site, but I'm sure I could learn to like the white look, but it doesn't seem as cool some how.

But the MOST IMPORTANT aspect of the redesign that annoys me somewhat is what's been removed...

Wheres the link back to the register that used to be in the header? If I follow a link from RSS or anywhere else I can't just click at the top to go to the register, and as that's your main site, which everything else derives credibility from, shouldn't that link be there?

I mean it's what always annoyed me about channel register, but I knew to avoid those links from the feed, and filtered them out.

Put the link back in the header PLEASE, pretty please, oh go on...

Oh and get another logo, that one really is poor.

Oh and overall the sections on the right are too large, I have to scroll down too far to find the sections at the bottom, the colour scheme is terrible, and well the old look was much better. If my taste is not the norm I'll live with the new layout, but please, fix the missing links from the header...

Well...

I would have really hoped for more from The Reg Team.

This has a very amature feel to it, the color scheme , page balance, and the logo design are the main contributers, IMHO.

I am looking forward to see the next redesign (or a rollback).

Its all a bit web 1.9....

1) Gradient fades - Check!

2) Round corners - Check!

3) Swirly graphics getting in the way when doing stuff...................nope.

Close but no cigar folks....

Agree,,,

I have to agree with NoCo37, it's not good is it....I had to hunt for the Editors' Blog.

Change is good.....except when it's bad...

Maybe you could run a poll and let the public vote :)

Bring back the old site!

This one's terrible

New Design....... NIMBY.!!

I thought I'd wait a few days and give the new Reg HW a good run out before making my mind up.

I have, and I still don't like.

Gone are the easy links accross the top, the short cuts back to El Reg /proper/, gone is the 'cool but useless' which i always liked, gone is the PDA section, the phone section et al. OK, maybe join the phones and pda together, to save on....... er, not sure really.

But now, things are a bit, well, messy.

to quote 'pctechxp' : bring back the old site.!!!!

Re. sections

staff

They're all still there, Mark, even Useless... but Cool. Having expanded the number of sections fourfold, we couldn't get 'em all in along the top, so they're listed on the right-hand side, down a bit.

Q & A

Which is the best Linux for laptops?

I have been starting to venture into the Linux/Unix world, currently using the Ubuntu 8.04 on my ThinkPad X60. But is there a better distro for mobiles?

I've given up buying DVDs, though I haven't stopped watching them. Quite the reverse - I'm watching more movies and TV series than ever before. Before you suggest it, I'm not downloading anything either...
