Nvidia to launch top-of-the-line mobile GPU on Monday?

Monday, 19 November looks set to see the launch of Nvidia's latest top-of-the-range mobile GPU, if muted conversations we've overheared in the vicinity of London's Tottenham Court Road are to be believed.

The chip's the GeForce 8800M GTX, and it's believed to be the 65nm die-shrink of the 90nm mobile 'G80' chip Nvidia released this past May and used in the 8400M and 8600M series, and more recently the 8700M GT.

The 8700M GT contains 32 Stream processors, connects to 512MB of video memory clocked at 800MHz, while the GPU core runs at 625MHz.

Its successor is also expected to come connected to 512MB of memory but as yet the speeds of core and Ram remain unknown. However, since the part is thought to be essentially a 'G92' GeForce 8800 GT - reviewed here (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11/12/review_nvidia_geforce_8800_gt/) - we can probably expect the thing will contain up to 112 Stream processors.

And since the 65nm part should run cooler than its 90nm predecessors, there's room to up the core frequency without busting the thermal envelope required by notebooks.

If claims that machines based on the new part "surpass any performance a notebook has ever seen" prove to be true, the 8800M GTX could well help Nvidia get even closer to pushing past Intel (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/10/29/gpu_market_q3_07/) to become the world's biggest selling graphics chip maker.
