Eco-lobbyist Greenpeace is on a mission to upset the gaming industry, because consoles are apparently upsetting the environment. It’s ranked the Wii as the least environmentally friendly console, compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Clash of the Consoles: Greenpeace urges gaming to go green
Although none of the consoles fare very well in Greenpeace’s ‘Clash of the Consoles’ report (http://www.greenpeace.org/international/clashoftheconsoles/), the Wii scored zero points because Nintendo has thus far failed to eliminate the worst toxic chemicals commonly used in electronics from its console. Nintendo doesn’t have a policy for toxic chemical elimination.
Sony and Microsoft also each felt Greenpeace’s wrath for failing to eliminate the worst toxic chemicals from the PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively. However, the organisation did note that each company has a toxic chemical elimination policy, but spanked Microsoft for not planning to put this into effect until 2011. Sony’s policy doesn't actually cover the PlayStation, Greenpeace said.
However, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 fared much worse than the Wii when Greenpeace tested standby electricity use. The Xbox 360 Elite model apparently used 97W, while the PS3 consumes 128W. The Wii uses up just 15W, the NGO said.
Greenpeace is now urging gamers to barrage Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo with emails until they “green their game”.
The report builds on an earlier Greenpeace ranking (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11/28/greenpeace_environmental_report/) that listed 18 electronics companies and their environmental status, again placing Nintendo at the bottom. Sorry, Mario...
