Comments on ‘USB Missile Launcher gets integrated spyscope webcam’

What about...

Black Helicopters

The wireless one, with a webcam on top and a laser pointer underneath?

That way, not only can you see your target, you can see the little dot-sight as well... :-D

Nah

Go

Nah, I'd want a wireless networkable missile launcher that had both camera and laser spot. This means that when I'm away from the effective launch site, I can hop on and target those that are not doing as they are told! Controllable from a web browser - Ha ha!! Power is almost mine...

About blimmin time

Thumb Up

We have all been saying this was needed since it's first release, no idea why it has taken so long.

Now question is can you still run a battery with just one camera!?

I have seen so many mods of this in our office it is hilarious, all sorts of camera's and bits and pieces mashed together.

Wireless anyone??

Paris Hilton

Then you will be able to position your launcher for maximum effect; and also bring in the possibility of hacking in and turning someone's launcher against them!! :-)

But !! Hold On!!!

Where the Paris Hilton angle??

Well, I have heard that this toy confuses her. the missiles remind her of something, but she's not quite sure what..........

Nice... good way to fool the burglars...

They think it's a toy, you know it's a CCTV camera. :-)

We can do better

Alien

Anyone care to program a controller with a viola-jones face detector so it can self-aim?

Disclaimer: Aim it a little below the face or you'll get blamed when someone is hit in the eye. Better yet allow the user to program the offset. V-J face detectors detect Twi'leks but not Rodians or Wookiees so are unlikely to come in handy for many attacks by Star Wars aliens. Star Trek aliens are much easier to detect in general. Greys do not exist.

The next step

Pirate

What about some serious ammo for the launchers? I can imagine what the London police force would like to use...

Ultimate office toy

I had one of this running on an office server; anyone could VNC in to fire it. I tried to attach a webcam and laser pointer to the frame but the combined weight was a bit much for it. And the cables got in the way.

A few suggestions

Flame

We have the camera and the laser sighting, but I think the following could be in the pipeline:-

Wireless, webcam (with Night vision), laser targeting, mobile (fire and move) missile launcher.

and maybe a redesign so it looks like this

If you want range,

Thumb Up

you can always grab one of those Gefen USB over ethernet devices. Of course, you'd have to up your military budget considerably... :)

As soon as they replace...

Thumb Down

...those poxy foam rubber missiles with 3 depleted uranium armour-piercing incendiary rounds I'll get my order in.

wireless

if it's wireless it should get some wheels too, so the controller can move it around and shoot up at people

Such potential...

Happy

It started out as something so simple yet so cool and the potential is encouraging. Build the thing around a decent, remote controlled multiple axle frame, strong and big enough to support the webcam, laser-sight, wireless capabilities and anything else we can think up to throw in, come on, someone out there must be lacking the social skills to be able to knock this together in double-quick time...

USB extension cables

are cheap.

Doing a Tim Taylor to get more power may also be possible.

Can we add a speaker with a choice of MP3s?

Thumb Up

Candidates:

1) Donald Trump saying "You're fired!"

2) Robert Duvall from Apocalypse Now saying "I love the smell of napalm in the morning!"

3) Bill Pullman as Cpl. Hudson from Aliens saying "Game over man! Game over!!"

Thoughts

A better idea would be some clever software to control the thing.

Ideally you'd be able to enter a floor plan, then select a target on it. The software would then steer/angle the launcher to suit, or just tell you the shot wasn't possible. The launcher would then lob the missiles in a nice arc onto the target.

The main reason for this is most offices don't allow direct line of fire. And it's a little more difficult to block/trace a shot coming in from above.

Another option would be to separate the camera & launcher. Put the camera up high with something to steer it, use it to designate a target, and the launcher is automatically adjusted to hit the target. Relatively simple stuff if you can mark out the position & height of the two bits of the system, especially if you add a range-finder onto the camera to get a proper target location...

@ Steven Kraft

Bill Pullman? Bill 'can't act my way out of a paper bag' Pullman?

Go and watch that film again you silly boy... Nothing worse than coming up with a good idea and ruining it with a cock up like that. :)

I think the actor you meant was Bill Paxton.. as Pvt Hudson. :)

Flying Taser blimps?

My buddy and I came up with an idea...fit a Taser on the darts, then glue the whole works to one of those indoor blimps. Sell the thing to a mall as a "Remote-Patrol Security Droid". If any teenagers start acting up you can just give them a quick zap, from the comfort of your air-conditioned Security Kiosk.

It probably would cause problems tho, because all the cute girls would end up with a gaggle of taser-armed blimps escorting them around the mall. At least it would keep the importunate boys away..."Uh, hey, what's your, like, sign?" ZARK ZARK ZARK

Get the weight down...

Thumb Up

tie it in with a RC helicopter and the worlds your lobster

I'm considering putting one of these in one of my clients server "room" without them knowing and see how long I can get away with it

What do you think of Apple's Time Capsule?

I'm after for a network-connected HD, and this seems the best option - good router, integrated drive, only one power cable, suitable for PCs as well as Macs.

Mac OS X Tiger out, Leopard back in

I couldn't resist. I went back to Leopard. I've been running Apple's latest operating system for well over a month now, originally 10.5.1 and now 10.5.2, with no untoward effects...
