Nokia’s got a smile on its face. The Finnish phone giant's N95 8GB handset has become the world’s first mobile to win wireless connectivity certification from the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA).
Nokia's N95 8GB: now with DLNA certification
DLNA who? It's an industry organisation that aims to provide an open platform through which wired and wireless consumer gadgets can all interact with each another and share content, where necessary with copy protection.
Sharing content the N95 8GB way
The DLNA's official line is that Nokia’s N95 8GB has been certified as a Mobile Media Digital Server, just one of the DLNA’s many certification categories for different gadgets.
Although the certification doesn’t automatically mean any additional connectivity features have been built into the N95, it does highlight the phone’s ability to transfer, say, photographs and music to other DLNA-certified kit - TVs and set-top boxes, for example.
The DLNA’s already certified around 1800 consumer gadgets, including several models of Sony’s Bravia TV (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/14/sony_bravia_b4000/) range, Pioneer’s Elite Blu-ray BDP-HD1 player and Solwise’s DMP-1120w UPnP/DLNA network media player – reviewed here (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11/29/review_solwise_dmp1120w/).
