Nokia is building on recent pledges to sell more eco-friendly handsets, by promising to halve the power consumption of its battery chargers.
The Finnish phone company hopes to cut the average amount of energy used by its AC adaptors when in no-load mode - the time they spend plugged in but not charging a phone - by 50 per cent within the coming years. It’s also pledged to increase its own use of green electricity sources from 25 per cent to 50 per cent by 2010.
Nokia’s already unveiled its Eco Sensor Concept handset (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/11/nokia_eco_sensor_concept/), which would be manufactured using printed electronics to help reduce the device’s size and reliance on non-renewable materials. The faceplate of its upcoming 3110 Evolve handset (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/04/nokia_world_3110_evolve/) is made from 50 per cent recyclable material.
The company’s already developed an AC charger that uses 94 per cent less power (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/04/nokia_world_3110_evolve/) to charge up a handset than US Energy Star specifications currently require.
