During a keynote speech, the Finnish mobile phone giant's chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, pulled a silver clamshell handset from his pocket. Although the phone, dubbed Remade, can't actually make or receive calls yet, he said parts of the phone, including its rigid metal case, have been made from recycled cans and plastic drink bottles.
The phone also incorporates old car tyres into its touch-sensitive keypad and uses recycled materials in its printed electronics.
Nokia hasn't said if it's planning to release the Remade handset, but the company already has a history of developing eco-friendly phones and accessories. The faceplate of its upcoming 3110 Evolve (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/04/nokia_world_3110_evolve/) handset is made from 50 per cent recycled materials. It's also pledged to cut (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/01/31/nokia_power_consumption_pledge/) the average amount of energy used by its AC adaptors by 50 per cent.
The company is spreading the recycling message among journalists too. At its NokiaWorld conference (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/12/11/nokia_eco_sensor_concept/) in Amsterdam last year, the Finnish company handed out notepads with covers made from recycled tyres and pens that said "I used to be electrical goods" down one side.
