Just when you thought the traditional floppy disk drive was about to breathe its last breath, UK retailer Maplin has given it the kiss of life and unveiled an internal floppy disk drive with 7-in-1 card reader.

Aside from housing a 3.5in bay for the floppy disk, the unit also incorporates slots for a range of newer storage formats, including SD cards and Compact Flash.
It has a USB 1.0/1.1/2.0 interface and is compatible with various versions of Windows, such as 2000 and XP. However, there’s no mention of support for Windows Vista.
The drive is available now from Maplin's high-street stores or online (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=A88BU&DOY=20m2) for £20 (€45/$60).
In January 2007, retailer PC World declared that it would stop stocking floppy disk drives (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/01/31/pcworld_floppy/) after all its remaining stocks had been run down.
