Sony has kept its firmware launch promise and released version 2.30 of the PlayStation 3's system software this week.

The firmware enables the PS3 to support DTS-HD Master Audio, the console's second HD audio format.

The PS3 already supports Dolby’s TrueHD, a rival HD audio format. But expanding the console’s audio support to include DTS-HD Master Audio, which features ona number of upcoming Blu-ray releases, at least allows consumers to choose which HD format they like the sound of best.

DTS claims that DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is "bit-for-bit identical to the studio master" at up to 24.5Mb/s on Blu-ray, with the audio encoded using 24-bit quantisation at 96kHz.

Firmware 2.30 also gives gamers access to the redesigned Sony PlayStation Store. The electronics giant said it reorganised the store due to customer demand for a better interface and easier navigation.
