There's now no doubt that Apple's bringing the iPhone to Australia: it's looking for an iPhone Field Validation Engineer there with "technical understanding and experience with GSM/GPRS, Edge, CDMA and UMTS".
So reveals a job ad posted on the company's website, though it's unclear how long the job description has been up. The position is based in Sydney, and the successful candidate will work with carriers to gain their approval for the iPhone to be used on their networks.
He or she will also be charged with investigating connectivity issues reported by carriers' customers and field operatives.
The reference to UMTS may appear to point directly to a 3G iPhone, but it's not a 'must have' attribute. What Apple does insist is essential is "testing and debug of GSM communications systems" and "experience in field testing and knowledge of interworking of cellular carriers".
Apple is also looking for iPhone Field Validation Engineers in the UK according to identical criteria as the Australian position. In Germany, it's looking for an iPhone Certification Project Manager who "will apply his/her detailed technical knowledge of wireless standards (3G, Wi-Fi) to understand, prioritize and resolve issues found during certification".
