If you’re a jet-setting business class flyer then you can now join the high-fi music crowd, because Singapore Airlines has launched an in-flight entertainment system supporting the iPod and iPhone.
The in-seat entertainment system is based around a 15.4in LCD, fitted with a pair of noise-cancellation headphones and equipped with a standard iPod dock connector.
Singapore Airline’s rig has been designed to ensure that snooty business class customers still have to listen to the announcements made by cabin crew, with the messages able to cut into whatever the passenger’s listening to or watching.
It’s not been mentioned whether passengers will be able to make calls from an iPhone. However, in March UK telecoms regulator Ofcom announced that mobile calls will be permitted on planes (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/03/27/emirates_plane_mobile_call/) flying in UK airspace – provided specific equipment is installed.
The Singapore Airlines system is already available on specific routes - Newark to Singapore, for example - with additional routes to be added from August. We won’t bother telling you the cost of a ticket, you can’t afford one anyway.
