The Samsung U940 slider smartphone was initially leaked by the FCC’s website back in February, but the phone has at long last been officially launched, as the Glyde.
Samsung's Glyde: aka the U940
Although very little was known about the device when Samsung first filed its U940 documents with the FCC (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/02/19/samsung_u940_fcc/), Register Hardware can now tell you that Glyde has a 2.8in touchscreen from underneath which slides - or should we say glides? - a Qwerty keyboard. A physical ‘home’ button just below the screen takes users directly into the phone’s menu.
We already knew the phone featured a two-megapixel flash-equipped camera, but Samsung’s since confirmed that images are stored on Micro SD cards of up to 8GB - putting Glyde in league with the first iPhone, in terms of storage capacity. Several audio formats are also supported, including MP3 and WMA, and a 2.5mm headphone jack’s built in.
Text can be entered through the 2.8in touchscreen or Qwerty keypad
Talkative users get around 210 minutes of chatting time and the standby life lasts for around 250 hours. Samsung hasn’t mentioned anything about the phone’s connectivity options, but an unofficial (http://samsungglyde.com/specs) Samsung Glyde website claims the phone supports dual-band CDMA and 3G.
Samsung’s Glyde is initially only available in the US with network operator Verizon for around $250 (£125/€150).
