AT&T prices up PAYG 3G iPhones

AT&T will sell a contract-free 8GB 3G iPhone for $599 (£301) - exactly what the first version was priced at when it went on sale a year or so ago.

The 16GB model will cost $699 (£351).

Subsidised, the two models will set buyers back $199 and $299, respectively, but that price comes at the cost of a two-year airtime package.

But while AT&T today said how much the pay-as-you-go iPhone will cost, it didn't say when they'll go on sale. At some point "in the future", was all it would say, Associated Press reports.

AT&T said the cheaper version will be available from 8am on launch day, 11 July. That lends some weight - albeit circumstantially - that the handset will go on sale in the UK on 7am, as has been claimed.

So far, O2 has been as reticent as AT&T to discuss the details of its PAYG package.

Last week, it was claimed that the O2 website briefly flagged £300 and £360 as the prices for the 8Gb and 16GB PAYG - prices remarkably close to AT&T's. ®
