We thought Asus' Eee family was all about making computing easy for the non-technical, but Asus apparently no longer does, if claims it's preparing a line of Eee-branded motherboards are to be believed.

So far as we can see, Asus itself hasn't made any comment on the claim, spoken by unnamed industry sources and relayed by DigiTimes. The boards are due to debut during Q1 2009.

Most desktop Small, Cheap Computers currently use Intel's own D945GCLF mobo, which comes with either a single-core Atom 230 CPU soldered on, or a dual-core Atom 330.

If the report is true, Asus clearly reckons it can do a better job, and that DIY PC enthusiasts and System Builders will flock to the product for that reason and for its brand, which is synonymous with SCCs.

We can't, after all, see many typical Eee users, attracted by the platform's straightforward Linux-based UI, feeling the need to build simple-to-use systems of their own.
