Many countries set aside days to remember fallen war heroes, but now 3 February shall forever be known as Entertainment Software Day – in Texas, at least.

The US state’s awarded the title – thought to be the first of its kind - to ensure that local inhabitants, including George 'Dubya' Bush, recognise the positive impact that the games industry has had on its economy.

Michael Gallagher, CEO of the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), described the decision as “an endorsement of the artistic and economic contributions [that] our industry has made to the state”.

Famous Texas-based games developers include Wii games designer Blazing Lizzard, Gearbox Software - of Half Life and Brothers in Arms fame - and, of course, Doom-merchant Id Software.

The game industry grew by 17 per cent in 2006, according to ESA figures, adding $395m (£272m/€307m) to Texas’ liberal coffers. ®
