Kuro TVs look set to become something of a collector’s item, because Pioneer has announced plans to leave the telly market.

The shock move has, according to the Japanese firm, been decided upon as a way of helping it improve profitability.

Pioneer will officially withdraw from the TV business by the end of March 2010 - not coincidentally the conclusion of its 2010 fiscal year. Warranties and after-sales service on its TVs will still be honoured, it promised.

The firm said in a statement that it’s been “implementing restructuring measures to improve profitability” since 2008, such as termination of plasma display panel production. It’s also axing 10,000 jobs worldwide.

But what’s to come of the former telly giant? Well, Pioneer’s Home Electronics business – which already makes its consumer audio kit – will continue producing DJ equipment. Car electronics also appears to be a firm favourite for the company.

Pioneer said it’s also considering a joint venture into the optical disc business, but specific details are still a secret. ®
