Trimble has bashed out a ruggedised Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) running not the customary Windows XP but Vista. The firm claimed the machine will let you take your desktop into the harshest of outdoor environments.

Trimble's Yuma: protected against water and dust

The 225 x 137.5 x 22 x 50mm Yuma weighs in at 1179g. It has a 7in, 1024 x 600 “sunlight-readable” screen and a body that’s protected against accidental drops, vibration and humidity. For example, the shell, Trimble claimed, is impervious to both dust and water.

On the outside of the toughened PC are two cameras, a pair of USB 2.0 ports and an ExpressCard slot. A rear-mounted screw will also let you fix the PC to a tripod.

Underneath the ruggedised shell lurks a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor and a 32GB solid-state drive. Well, it would have to be, wouldn’t it?

The machine sports 802.11b/g Wi-Fi Bluetooth 2.0 and an integrated GPS pick-up.

Trimble’s Yuma will be available in April, but a price hasn’t been announced yet. ®
