LG to stop making plasma TVs?

Following Pioneer's example, moles claim

LG it to become the latest manufacturer to exit the plasma telly business, it has been claimed.

The firm will stop making plasma panels later this year, industry sources cited by website DigiTimes have alleged.

It's also been claimed that LG will then sell equipment and technologies related to its PDP TV production business to China-based electronics giant Changhong.

LG’s yet to sign on the dotted line with Changhong, according to the sources, because the the two firms have yet to reach an agreement – presumably over how much Changhong will pay for LG’s PDP TV business.

The rumour’s no great surprise though, because LG recently announced cost-cutting restructuring plans – part of which will include a cut back on its investment in plasma production.

It’s no secret that plasma sales have suffered of late thanks, in part, to falling LCD prices. Earlier this year, Pioneer announced plans to wind down its Kuro plasma business, with the aim of exiting global plasma TV production by March 2010. ®
