Apple confirms 28 August is Snow Leopard day

Last week's leak was correct: Apple will ship Snow Leopard on 28 August.

Apple's online store last week put up a page listing Mac OS X 10.6's "available" date as the 28th. The company quickly spotted the sudden change and reverted the date to simply "September".

Now the press release is ready and approved by management, and the OS' release date can be set to 28 August.

Snow Leopard will cost $29/£25 to Mac users running 10.5 - aka Leopard. If you're still running an older version of the operating system, you'll need to buy a $169/£129 box set containing Snow Leopard, iLife and iWork - not a bad deal, since the last two each cost $79/£69 a pop on their own.

You'll also need an Intel-based Mac. PowerPC machines aren't supported, and even Rosetta ~~Stone~~, the Intel-based PowerPC emulator that's been part of OS X for a while now becomes an optional install with the debut of 10.6. ®
