Review How important is security for a powerline Ethernet network? It's a lot less of an issue than it is with wireless networking, that's for sure. Most powerline connections are shielded by all the gubbins at the meter, but folk in buildings with many dwellings or offices and only one feed to the outside world will need to tweak the technology's security feature.

Review Devolo's first HomePlug AV powerline Ethernet adaptor, the dLAN 200 AVdesk, wasn't a unit that plugs straight into a mains power socket, unlike Netgear's HDX101, which I reviewed last week and, for that matter, UK vendor Solwise's 200Mbps PL-200AV product. But while the HDX101 and the Solwise use much the same form-factor, they're based on different technologies.

Review It's a neat trick being able to transmit data around your home or office via the mains power wiring. You get a more stable, less interference-prone connection than Wi-Fi and a potentially faster link too. The downside is that there's no roaming, at least not beyond the reach of an RJ-45 cable and however many powerline adaptors you've got dotted around your house.

Review You can't beat a wireless network for true ad hoc connectivity. But like so many things in life, there's a catch - several, in fact. Depending on the construction of the building you inhabit, there may be areas where you can't get a signal. If, like me, you live in a neighbourhood stuffed with 802.11b and 802.11g networks, you can find them interfering with each other, limiting the available bandwidth. And then you've still got to ensure your WLAN's as safe as it can be from snoopers.

One alternative is to lay down wires, but that's costly if you do it right and a leg-break hazard if you don't. However, Taiwanese communications kit make ZyXEL has another recommendation: use the cables you've already got - your power lines...
